Soccer Coaching Staff

Coach Simon Phipps, originally from Essex, England, has been involved with Gilmer high school soccer for four years. His first year was spent as a community coach working with both the boys and girls program.  His second year he was one of two assistant coaches, and last year was his first year as head coach.

In addition to coaching at the high school level, Simon has also coached for the local soccer club for the last three years and strongly believes in the total integration of high school, middle school, and rec programs for the overall improvement of all players.

Coach Phipps has been amazed at the large numbers of boys who have come to both pre-season conditioning and practice, the current squad for both JV and Varsity is 34 boys.

The targets for the Varsity squad this season are to qualify for region play offs by finishing in fourth place or above.

The JV program is about developing players and preparing them for Varsity games in the future.

Coach Josh Fountain, a Gilmer County native, has been involved with the GHS soccer programs for five years.  The first four years were spent as the girls soccer assistant coach.  For the 2016-2017 season, Coach Fountain is assisting both the girls and the boys programs.

Prior to coaching soccer, Josh was a middle school softball coach, an assistant baseball coach, and an assistant football coach.  Josh prides himself on doing whatever is necessary to build the fundamentals necessary for helping to build programs.

He has two boys who are both involved in rec sports.

Coach April Nicholson is in her fifth year as the Ladycats head soccer coach.  In addition to coaching soccer, she also coaches high school cross country.  In the fall, she and Coach Phipps coach rec soccer teams.  Coach April is an advocate of community involvement and encourages her players to get involved with youth sports by coaching, officiating, or attending youth sporting events.

Under her direction, along with Coach Fountain, the Ladycats have broken several school records, including:  Least Goals Allowed in a season, Most Goals Scored in a Season, and Most wins in a season.

Coach April hopes to see the girls place fourth place or above in the region to qualify for state play-offs.
