The first cross country meet at Pickens Preview has set the stakes high for the rest of the season. Before cross country had even officially started, the Varsity Boys runners were already being disregarded in the line up for this years state meet. It is apparent by the results of this race that the boys took this as a challenge.
Luke Stolz led Gilmer in the Boys Varsity 5k, running a time of 17:28 and earning a 6th place spot for the team. No more than 10 seconds later, Sophomore Carlos Cruz (8th place) and
senior Carson Masenthin (11th place) crossed the finish line, achieving respective times of 17:33 and 17:38. These top three runners all managed to obtain spots within the top 11 (out of 130 runners). Rounding out the top 5 Varsity boys was Josh Teague at 18 minutes 53 seconds and Austin Masenthin with a time of 19:39.
Gilmer’s Varsity girls also had a nice turnout, with Sophomore Grace Pleasant finishing in 23:42. Up next was Norma Solis (25:24), Elsa Francisco (25:44), and Moriah Martin (26: 01). The final time of Gilmer’s Top five girls was 26:34, ran by Senior Josie Sheahan.
Our Varsity boys team placed 4th overall, just barely beaten out of 3rd by Pickens County on their home race course. The average time for the top five runners was 18 minutes, 11 seconds easily the best GHS boys have ever ran at the season kick-off event.
The ladies pulled through with 11th place out of 13 teams. All in all, Pickens Preview was a successful first meet, and a good precursor to the rest of the season.
