Our FFA chapter works hard all year long to get ready for CDE’s (Career Development Events) recently they had two teams advance to State in the Land Evaluation CDE. Here is what Mr.Brandon Ray says about the Gilmer High FFA success.
“I would like to commend and congratulate your local FFA Chapter, Gilmer County High School and Advisors David Bushey and Paul Little for recently placing 1st overall in the Area 1 Senior Land Judging Competition as well as 2nd overall in the Area 1 Junior Land Judging CDE. To qualify 2 different teams for a state contest is an impressive task. The practice time spent with these students, as well as the advisor’s passion for agriculture, was evident. There are 6 areas in Georgia with over 40,000 FFA members and Gilmer County FFA has earned the right to compete in the State Land Judging Career Development Event against only 11 other teams. The event will be held at Fort Valley State University on October 29th.
The Land Judging CDE is designed to develop skills in determining soil characteristics and determining land capability classes based upon the characteristics. Skills are also developed in determining the agricultural land use and land treatment practices that should be applied to conserve soil and water while utilizing the land for its most intensive use. This is the foundation for all other agricultural operations and is one that is important to teach our youth.
There were over 20 teams at the Area 1 Land Judging Compeition at Berry College last week that Gilmer County FFA competed against. Again I would like to commend the FFA advisors and students within the Gilmer County FFA for this honor. Thank you very much for your support of your local agriculture program, it is evident from the attitudes and success of your FFA advisors.”
The junior team consisted of Dalton Holcombe, Solomon Weaver, Sadie Bryan, Chloe Hensley and Caleb Waddell and senior team consisted of Grant Ledford, Bryson Smith, Will Poole and Dakota Scoggins The teams will be traveling to Fort Valley State University on October 29th. We are looking forward to seeing the success these young people have! Good luck!
